About

I notice, hear or think things. Then I tend to write about them.

I’m Rachel Muthoni. I’m a business leader and writer, and the author of What We Were Never Taught About Money.

I’ve spent the last 15 years building a broad career across business development, finance, product and revenue growth, and operations, with much of my work spanning Africa, the Middle East and India.

The breadth has shaped how I think. I’ve seen business from the numbers side, the customer side and the very real business of making things happen. I’ve had to think about growth, products, people and execution, and learnt that the lines between them are rarely as neat as our organisation charts suggest. The best commercial idea still has to work in the real world, and great execution ultimately has to create value for someone.

I’ve also worked across different countries, cultures and teams, which has given me plenty of stories, a healthy respect for context and an enduring curiosity about why people and organisations work the way they do.

Much of what I write comes from that curiosity. Sometimes it’s leadership or work. Sometimes money. Sometimes parenting, growth, ambition or something completely ordinary that made me stop and think. There isn’t always a neat connection between them. That’s rather the point.

Live. Notice. Write.

This is the thread that ties it all together.

“And then there’s money…”

Because it touches almost everything.

Personal finance has been an interest of mine for years. At 25, I made a deliberate decision to learn more about managing my own money. By then, I had spent years working in finance, but some of the most important lessons I learnt about money had very little to do with spreadsheets.

That journey eventually became What We Were Never Taught About Money, a beginner’s guide designed to help people understand not only what to do with money, but their own habits, beliefs and choices around it. Practical, honest and written for real life.

This site is where I continue those conversations and start new ones.
